Water Contamination in Oil

Water presense in oil

Water in oil is present in three different forms:

·    Dissolved – Color of the oil will not change.

·    Emulsified – Color of the oil will be hazy (White/Cream colored).

·    Free – Color of the oil will be hazy and water accumulation will be there at bottom of the tank or at top of the oil surface.

Water Solubility Limits of Oil at 40°C:

·    Hydraulic Oil – 275 ppm

·    Gear Oil – 200 ppm

·    Turbine Oil – 100 ppm

·    Fryquel EHC Fluid – 4000 ppm

Water is in dissolved form up to the water solubility limit.

Water solubility limit increases with increase in temperature.

REMOVAL of water from OIL

There are two good ways to remove water from oil:

Centrifuge Machine

·    Removes Free Water

·    Removes Emulsified Water

·    Does not remove Dissolved Water

Vacuum Dehydrator machine

·    Removes Free Water

·    Removes Emulsified Water

·    Removes 80% of Dissolved Water

Sources of water ingress in systems

There are multiple sources of water contamination:

·    Rainwater leakage

·    Heat Exchanger or Cooler (Worn Seals)

·    Breathers
